Frugal Tips for Homemakers

Learning how to run a household is a task that school systems have neglected to teach kids. As a result, most people move into their first apartment or house without the slightest idea about what they need to do to keep their finances in order and their home operational. Fortunately, once you know a few tricks for keeping control of your home finances you will be just fine.

Tip #1 – Know Your Assets and Expenses

The first thing you need to do when setting up your household finances is to know what your assets and expenses are for each month. You need to write these down so you can “see” what you have to work with and what you need to spend each month. This will make your budget tangible and real to you.

Tip #2 – Carry a Calculator With You When You Shop

To help keep you within your budget it is a good idea to carry a small calculator with you when you go grocery shopping. As you select items for your basket enter the cost on your calculator. This will allow you to track how much you are spending, and this will help you to stay within your grocery budget.

Tip #3 – Plan Out Your Meals

A lot of money is wasted each month because of inefficient shopping. To avoid buying items that you will either not use or that will add little value to your pantry, simply plan out your meals for the week. You can then create a shopping list that will allow you to make each meal. This will also help you to search out sales for the items you need to get for the week.

Tip #4 – The Crock Pot Is Your Friend

Another money waster is the individual serving pre-packaged meals. You can save 50 to 75% on individual meals by using your crock pot to create large batches of soups, stews and other dishes that freeze well. The best part of crock pot cooking is that you just dump everything into the crock pot and let it cook all day long while you are at work.

Tip #5 – Couponing the Smart Way

Couponing is an easy way to save money. While some people take couponing to the extreme, you can save $10 or more dollars a week on your groceries just by using coupons that you come across through the week. You can also search online for coupons for specific products.
